Year-end Review of Animal Park Fauna 2024: Gratitude Extended to All Donors
In the heart of a bustling city, Fauna Zoo faced an unexpected challenge when heavy rain on May 21st caused extensive damage. Mud was washed away, fences toppled, asphalt destroyed, piping and sewage pumps ruined, and hectares of the surrounding area drained. The zoo's operations were disrupted, and a long road to recovery lay ahead.
But the zoo was not alone in its struggle. A flood of offers of various kinds of help poured in from all corners, ensuring that Fauna Zoo would not face the restoration alone.
Zoo2go, in a generous gesture, created an interactive park map at their own expense. Firma Amefa donated zoo children's cutlery, while Firma Item helped with material purchases. The Brothers Schleiminger, travelling through Europe for the 6 Bridges Rally project, collected a large sum of donations for the zoo.
The Gerd-Kaimer-Citizen's Foundation played a crucial role in the restoration, making it possible to renovate and equip the 60-year-old tar-paper pond with new technology. The Giossi Foundation financed the construction of a new second pigsty, and the Stadt-Sparkasse Solingen financed the conversion of the old showcase into a salamander facility.
Baumgartner Timber Trade came to the aid of the zoo on several occasions, providing essential resources during the restoration. The city's nature and environmental service and the technical operations of Solingen asphalted a part of the path at the employee entrance and changed the gradient in the outdoor area.
Hundesalon Baldur organised a dog fair where the zoo was able to present themselves and receive a share of the proceeds. The waffle baking from Frischemarkt Dornseifer and the flea market of Grundschule Westersburg were among the many donors who supported the zoo financially.
The zoo's various veterinarians, the hunting community, and volunteers all played crucial roles in the zoo's operations. NABU Solingen, the Biodidactics of Uni Wuppertal, the Solingen Beekeepers' Association, the City Service Nature and Environment, and the DGHT (German Society for Herpetology and Terrarium Studies) were among the exhibitors and helpers who shaped the Species Protection Day.
Zoo and Garden Lieret, Firma Scalabrin, and Bergisch Land Natural Stone Quarries were among the executing companies that helped with the renovation and equipment of the tar-paper pond. Jurtenland provided material, manual work, and ideas for planning and implementing the gnome canopy.
Ronny Wagner Strahl- und Oberflächentechnik, Stratmann Garten- und Landschaftsbau, Eugen Scalabrin GmbH, and Juvet GmbH Asphaltiertechnik were among the construction companies that helped with quick and efficient implementation.
The restoration took good three months, two weeks completely without income and generally very much money and nerves. But through the support of the community, the zoo was able to weather the storm and continue its mission of conservation and education.
The dwarf otter enclosure was opened at the beginning of the autumn holidays, and the Species Protection Day was held a week later than planned, on September 1, despite the horrifying event on August 23. The Gerd-Kaimer-Citizen's Foundation is currently funding the construction of a washing bear enclosure.
The zoo would like to thank all loyal visitors, members, donors, and supporters who helped the zoo continue to develop. Without the flood of offers of various kinds of help, the zoo would not have managed the restoration. The resilience and spirit of the community shone brightly during this challenging time, and Fauna Zoo continues to thrive because of it.
