Week 2 of the Thursday Night Mowing League 2025: Title holder from 2024 National Tournament steps down, offering chances to rivals

Week 2 of the Thursday Night Mowing League 2025: Title holder from 2024 National Tournament steps down, offering chances to rivals

Sitting here at my desk, with stormy skies looming, I'm damn grateful for the Thursday Night Mowing League I started in 2021.

Before establishing the Thunderous Turf Tussle, I probably would've just skipped mowing on a rainy night like last week. I mowed Wednesday with a 3" mower deck, thinking it was gonna rain on league night.

But it did rain Thursday, yet it also got hot, sunny, and windy. By 7 p.m., the playing field was dry, and I hopped outside, lowered the deck to 2 1⁄2", and got the yard mowed.

Back-to-back mowing nights?

It's springtime. The grass is acting more lascivious than a sailor these days. It's on some PEDs for sure.

What would've happened if I didn't mow last week? My next mowing day, given the weather, would've been next Wednesday, and the lawn would've been 6" high, possibly taller.

It's members like Dan Dakich who inspired me to get off my ass last week and FIGHT-MOW!

If Dan is out there on league night, I better get out there during the breaks and get it done. The reward? I can let it rain all weekend, and I'll know I'm all set. Nothing beats that feeling when I hit the hay.

Week 2 Highlights of the 2025 season:

  • The Virtual Salon: Last week's Facebook conference was one of the most-watched videos in league history.
  • Ken's Transformation: Ken Peterson in Nebraska had a 6-point week. That's big news, given that Ken used to be rather elusive. Initially, he'd send in photos of his push broom against his riding mower. Now, he's showcasing his diverse content, hosting his own post-mow press conferences, and blossoming out of his shell. Kudos to Ken. He's evolving from a grumpy old man to a respected league member.
  • Champions' Lull: Both our past two national champions started with a delayed mowing night. Timmy2Cuts in Cincinnati missed Week 1. Don't get it twisted; anyone can snatch the crown with determination and a bit of luck with the weather, as I've emphasized multiple times.
  • New Era in the West: South Dakota filed its first mowing report of the season, and I'm expecting Minnesota to join us next week.
  • Ladies, We Hear You: I'll encourage our T-Shirt Manager Olivia G. to explore league gear tailored to you.
  • DEI at its Finest: TNML is the most welcoming and inclusive league for those who want to take pride in their properties and refuse to let their lawns turn into dumpsters. As I mentioned during this week's press conference, TNML embraces everyone with open arms.
