Grooving in Frankfurt: Modern Tones Resonate in Grand City Chimes' Revamped Symphony for Pentecost Eve

City rings out unique melody for Pentecost celebration - Urban chimes echo during Pentecost, introducing a novel melody to the bustling metropolis.

Step into the pulsating heart of Frankfurt and be prepared to be united with the city's soaring spirits as the Grand City Chimes, a cherished open-air experience, takes on a thrilling new avatar. Every year, a medley of 50 bells from various churches in the city harmoniously ring out, marking major religious holidays. Yet, this Pentecost Eve will see the unveiling of a fresh composition, composed by the internationally acclaimed Ensemble Modern.

The ensemble comprising soloists based in Frankfurt has infused the Grand City Chimes symphony with a captivating sense of immersion, aptly titled "supra urbem" (above the city) in Latin. This mesmerizing composition will be played annually on the Saturday before Pentecost, marking a memorable addition to the city's storied religious celebrations.

The resounding voices of the bells will echo through ten iconic inner-city churches, including the esteemed Paulskirche, the Hauptwache's Katharinenkirche, and the Old Nikolaikirche on the Römerberg. The Nine bells of the Imperial Cathedral, including the Gloriosa, the city's heaviest and most esteemed bell weighing nearly 12,000 kilograms, will join the chorus.

The Ensemble Modern's composition will be heard during a carefully dedicated window from 4:30 PM to 5:00 PM. Initially, the bells will fill the air individually, from the highest to the lowest notes, before uniting harmoniously as they have in the past. Be there as the city comes alive with the symphony, fostering a unique connection between the residents and their rich, historic cityscape.

The iconic Grand City Chimes symphony etched its name in Frankfurt's annals in 1856, with the decision to ring out on Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost. The prestigious title, Grand City Chimes, was added later, signifying the city's rich heritage and cultural significance.
