Town centers receive approval for increased accessibility by Lensahn
In the heart of Lensahn, a significant step towards creating a more inclusive and accessible city center has been taken. The town council has approved a concept that prioritises safe crossings on Eutiner Straße and Badestraße, accessible sidewalks, improved bus stops, more accessible seating, and the removal of obstacles.
The action catalog, which ranges from short-term measures to long-term redesigns, is now set to transform the town center. However, the adoption of the concept only serves as an approval of recommendations. The administration's task is to develop and present concrete proposals based on these, with final implementation decisions to be made by politics.
Mayor Michael Robien addressed concerns about parking spaces, stating that only a portion of the parking spaces on Eutiner Straße will be removed, specifically from the ice cream parlor. Five to six meters of the parking strip will no longer be designated for vehicles, but the majority of the area between Schiebold and Rossmann will remain intact.
Councillor Jan Westensee (CDU) suggested that each measure should be individually discussed and decided in the responsible committees, ensuring a thorough examination of each proposal. Councillor Mathias Schmidt (SPD) raised concerns about potential conflicting goals, such as the need to maintain the rural character of the area and the importance of car access.
The concept is limited to the town center due to urban development funding requirements. Safety concerns of citizens along main roads have been a central issue, and this new initiative aims to address these concerns, making Lensahn a more welcoming and accessible town for all its residents.
Moreover, the concept serves as a basis for future urban planning, with both successful solutions and weaknesses to be analysed and learned from. The journey towards a barrier-free city center in Lensahn has begun, and it promises to be an exciting one.
