Thriving Weegerhof: Residents and SBV Lean on Environmental Practices for Prosperity
SBV Settlements Embrace Sustainable Transformation
The Spar- and Building Society (SBV) has taken significant steps towards creating sustainable, energy-efficient communities within its settlements. Recently, SBV officials, including Juliane Hilbricht, head of the city's housing department, and board members Uwe Asbach and Roland Bak, visited the SBV settlements to witness the progress firsthand.
The sustainable transformation of SBV settlements involves a holistic approach, combining ecological restoration, energy-saving building upgrades, and active resident participation in eco-friendly living spaces.
Ecological Rehabilitation and Green Spaces
Inspired by green development visions, SBV is committed to transforming degraded lands into lush, sustainable environments. A prime example of this is the wildflower area implemented near the Weegerhof senior living facility. This pilot project, which bloomed in many colors throughout the summer, includes white "wild carrot", blue cornflowers, red poppies, and yellow-white chamomile.
Energy-Efficient Renovation Strategies
Renovations aim to improve energy efficiency by enhancing insulation, using energy-saving materials, and upgrading systems for heating, cooling, and electricity. The SBV has gained concrete experience from the wildflower project and will implement an SBV-wide rainwater strategy to reduce the use of drinking water for watering plants in SBV settlements.
Resident Engagement in Eco-Friendly Living Spaces
Residents play a crucial role in the sustainable transformation of SBV settlements. The Greenlings, a resident group in the Höhscheid settlement, is dedicated to co-creating their living space in an eco-friendly manner. The Greenlings team, along with Dirk Düben, head of the operating units, and some trainees, answered questions about the sustainable transformation of the SBV at the "Bergisch Land" sustainability festival.
The SBV's commitment to sustainability is evident in every aspect of its development. From the installation of a new round bench near the laundry room in the Weegerhof settlement, made from reclaimed materials, to the excavation and preparation of the wildflower area, the SBV is leading the way in creating sustainable, energy-efficient communities.
