The enchanting flock of sheep has significantly restored the ecosystem on Governors Island, but their tenure comes to an end this summer.
🌟Saying Goodbye to the Furry Gardening Squad 🐑
This year marks a bittersweet farewell—it's the final season for the beloved sheep residents of New York's Governors Island! The five furry friends have been tending the island's gardens for five summers, munching on invasive species like phragmites, creeping Jenny, and artemisia. Since their arrival in 2021, these critters have chomped through an impressive 15 hectares of unwanted plant life, freed up countless human hours for the horticulture team, and protected the island's ecosystem! 💚
Meet the crew: Bowie, Chad, Evening, Philip Aries, and the fearless leader, Jupiter. Hailing from the Friends of Tivoli Lake Preserve and Farm in Albany, the horticulture team has gotten to know these woolly workers like the backs of their hooves over the years. Fun fact: the one female among the crew seems to call the shots!
The forthcoming season brings a sentimental goodbye to the sheep crew, who have been managing the home-and-garden landscape of Governors Island for five years. Despite their impending departure, their impact on controlling invasive species in the gardens will remain, contributing positively to our lifestyle and the island's ecosystem for years to come.
