Surprise Move by Chiefs Prior to Week 1 Kickoff
Mike Edwards, a two-time Super Bowl champion, has found himself without a team once again after the Kansas City Chiefs opted to release the veteran safety. Edwards joined the Chiefs in 2023, following a stint with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he helped claim the Lombardi Trophy in 2020.
In Kansas City, Edwards was seen as an experienced option behind the starters in Steve Spagnuolo's defense. He brought playoff experience and versatility to the Chiefs' secondary, but his tenure with the team was cut short due to a series of injuries and roster decisions.
During the preseason, Edwards recorded three tackles against the Seattle Seahawks before leaving the game with a hamstring issue. However, his recent injury history, which includes a concussion and other injuries that kept him out of official games since 2023, ultimately left little room for him moving forward in Kansas City.
Edwards' release from the Chiefs creates space for younger options to develop behind the established starters. His experience and track record could make him a candidate for other teams in need of secondary depth before Week 1.
It's worth noting that Edwards was not part of the "Helmet Catch" in Super Bowl XLII. That iconic moment belonged to David Tyree of the New York Giants against the New England Patriots, with no player from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers making the catch.
Despite the circumstances, Edwards' contributions to both the Buccaneers and Chiefs will not be forgotten. He leaves Kansas City as a two-time Super Bowl champion, a reliable depth piece on paper, and a player who brought valuable experience to the Chiefs' secondary.
