Speed limit reduced to 30 km/h and dedicated cycling lane to be tried out on Luegallee in Dusseldorf-Oberkassel.

The city of Düsseldorf has announced plans for a trial phase on Luegallee, aiming to enhance the street and improve the quality of life for residents while reducing conflicts among road users. The trial phase, scheduled to begin in June 2023, is the first step in a broader planning and participation concept for Luegallee and Belsenplatz.

Luegallee, one of the most noise-polluted streets in Oberkassel, according to traffic noise calculations from fall 2022, will see significant changes during the trial phase. One lane on Luegallee will be converted into a bike lane, with a speed limit of 30 km/h being implemented to promote safety and reduce noise pollution.

Public participation is a key aspect of the trial phase. Starting at the end of April, the city administration will present the plans at the meeting of District Representation 4 (Oberkassel, Niederkassel, Lörick, Heerdt). An information event for dialogue with citizens is planned in Oberkassel, and dialogue events are currently scheduled for mid-May 2023. Additionally, an online questionnaire will be available on the Traffic Management Department's website, and the questionnaire will also be distributed to the letterboxes of residents along Luegallee, Belsenstraße, and Düsseldorfer Straße.

Schools will also be directly involved in a dialogue event, with special attention being paid to school traffic during the trial phase. Further dialogue events with businesses and the Industry and Commerce Chamber are also planned.

The goal of the trial phase is to create a more livable and conflict-free environment for all road users. The city administration hopes that the trial phase will provide valuable insights and feedback to inform future decisions regarding Luegallee and Belsenplatz.

The testing could begin as early as summer 2023, and the trial phase is set to last for six months. For detailed information on urban planning or trial phases in Düsseldorf, it would be necessary to consult local government or transportation department resources.
