The historic sailing yacht "Wappen von Anklam" is set to return to the waters, following a significant renovation project that was completed earlier this year. The yacht, originally a sailing school ship of the former Gesellschaft für Sport und Technik (GST) in the GDR, was taken over by the sailing club Anklam e.V. in 1990.

The renovation project, which began in 2019, was a challenging undertaking due to constant unexpected issues and increased costs, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine crisis. The club's members, led by club chief Ronny Neukirch, persevered, and the funding project was finally completed by June 30th.

The total investment in the renovation of the "Wappen von Anklam" amounts to around 550,000 euros. This funding was primarily provided by the Leader fund, the Vorpommern fund, and the city of Anklam, with an approximate contribution of 350,000 euros, 75,000 euros, and 25,000 euros respectively. The club also received additional support from various Anklam companies and the surrounding area, both financially and materially.

Stefan Ulbrich, a club member, admitted that at times, it was questionable whether the ship renovation could continue. However, he states that the effort was worth it in the end. The sailors from Wolgast and Anklam have already had the opportunity to sail the renovated yacht in recent days, and they are eagerly anticipating the first major voyage.

For the regatta start, an eight-member crew is required to maintain the large yacht's course under peak performance. The yacht will be used primarily for youth training, providing a unique opportunity for young sailors to learn and grow on a historic vessel.

The first regatta for the renovated yacht is scheduled for this week at the Hanse Sail in Rostock. The club members are excited to showcase their hard work and the renovated "Wappen von Anklam" to the sailing community. The sailing yacht, built in 1953 at the Neptun shipyard in Rostock, will once again grace the waters, a testament to the resilience and dedication of the sailing club Anklam e.V. and their supporters.

  1. The renovated "Wappen von Anklam" offers the opportunity for young sailors to learn and grow under the lifestyle of outdoor-living, as the yacht will be used mainly for youth training.
  2. The home-and-garden section of Anklam might also appreciate the restoration efforts, as the renovated yacht's beauty is a symbol of the city's pride and momentum for the sports community.
