Schoolchildren's Rescue - Pupils Successfully Rescue a Drowning Child at School
In the Baden-Württemberg town of Nordheim, two schoolchildren, Marlene (11) and Leo (12), were hailed as 'little heroes and big role models' by Mayor Volker Schriek, after they saved a four-year-old boy from drowning in a 12.6-foot deep swimming pool.
The incident occurred in mid-August. The young boy had pushed his way to the front of the diving board, jumped into the pool, surfaced briefly, and then sank. Marlene and Leo, who were nearby, reacted faster than any adults present and dived into the pool to save the child.
Leo, who had practiced the towing grip a week earlier with the DLRG (German Lifeguard Association), plunged almost 13 feet deep in the pool to reach the child. Marlene, meanwhile, pressed water out of the boy's stomach at the pool's edge. Together, they used a towing technique to bring the boy to the surface.
Moments later, the boy could breathe again. Marlene recalled thinking, 'Get the child to the surface so it can keep living.' Marlene's friend pointed out that if they hadn't acted, the boy might not have lived to see his next birthday.
The life-saving grip they used is a crucial technique in preventing drowning incidents. Schriek praised their quick intervention and suggested that more parents should be aware of their responsibilities poolside. He believes that many parents should have intervened, but it was Marlene and Leo who did.
Marlene and Leo learned the life-saving grip just in time to save the child. Their quick actions prevented a potential tragedy in the swimming pool incident. The mayor expressed his gratitude and admiration for the children, stating that their actions were a testament to the importance of learning life-saving skills at a young age.
