Scent & Sound: Klara Ravat & Witch 'n' Monk Enchant at Fluid Form Club
Klara Ravat, a perfumer and olfactician, recently collaborated with the duo Witch 'n' Monk at the Fluid Form Club event on September 6. The performance was a unique sensory experience, combining music and scent to engage both ears and nose.
Ravat, co-founder and director of the Smell Lab Berlin, is known for her innovative use of scent in art. She has previously worked with musicians, such as the Ensemble Hermes in 2021, to create scented experiences of classical pieces like Vivaldi's Four Seasons. At Fluid Form Club, Ravat used different perfumes to complement the avant-garde, tribal, and eclectic flute-and-guitar jazz of Witch 'n' Monk.
The scents of blooming flowers, open fireplaces, and tropical locations created smellscapes that enhanced the musical soundscapes. The intimate crowd experienced a rare sensory immersion, engaging both their ears and nose. This performance is part of a growing trend towards sensory expansion in music, with new multidisciplinary forms like 4D sound and binaural audio emerging over the past decade. Olfactory art, as a medium that engages the fifth sense, has the potential to trigger new emotions and enhance musical experiences.
The collaboration between Klara Ravat and Witch 'n' Monk at the Fluid Form Club event showcased the potential of olfactory art in music. By triggering memories and emotions through scent, Ravat created a unique and immersive sensory experience. As this interdisciplinary practice gains recognition, it promises to enrich musical experiences and engage audiences in new ways.
