Sandcat Ufuk resides at the Green Zoo now

The Green Zoo in Wuppertal is gearing up for an exciting development in their small cat enclosure. The zoo's long-term plan is to introduce a female sand cat, a species native to the Arabian Peninsula, to join Ufuk, the sand cat born at the Berlin Zoo in June 2024.

Sand cats, such as Ufuk, are well-adapted to their desert habitat. They have densely haired paws that help them walk on hot sand without sinking or leaving tracks. Their sandy-coloured fur provides excellent camouflage, making them nearly invisible in their natural environment.

Ufuk has been settling into the indoor facilities in Wuppertal since his arrival. Initially, he will be visible to visitors but will be confined to the indoor area of the small cat house. Once he has fully adjusted, Ufuk will be able to explore the outdoor area of the enclosure.

The introduction of a female sand cat is intended to resume breeding of this small cat species at the Green Zoo. Sand cats, including Ufuk, typically live solitarily in nature. However, zoos play a crucial role in conserving these endangered species by facilitating breeding programmes.

Currently, there is no verifiable public information available about when and where the female sand cat will be introduced to the Green Zoo for breeding with Ufuk. For the latest updates on this exciting development, visitors are advised to contact the Berlin Zoo or the Green Zoo directly.

In the meantime, the small cat house in Wuppertal is temporarily closed to the public due to Ufuk's arrival. The zoo is ensuring that Ufuk settles in comfortably and prepares for the introduction of his potential companion.

The Green Zoo's sand cat project is a significant step towards the conservation of this unique and fascinating species. Visitors can look forward to witnessing the potential breeding of sand cats at the Green Zoo in the near future.

Sand cats like Ufuk, due to their home-and-garden of vast desert landscapes, have developed a unique lifestyle that includes being nearly invisible in their environment with sandy-coloured fur and dense-haired paws. As the Green Zoo readies for a new addition to their small cat enclosure, a female sand cat, their home-and-garden will expand, reflecting a lifestyle that mirrors that of sand cats in the wild.
