Royal couple, Prince William and Kate Middleton, are relocating to the Forest Lodge, a property situated within Windsor Great Park.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate Middleton, are set to make a significant move later this year, relocating to Forest Lodge within Windsor Great Park. This eight-bedroom Georgian mansion, dating back to the 1770s, will serve as their new family home, offering a more spacious, private, and family-friendly environment.
Forest Lodge, originally known as Holly Grove, became part of the Crown Estate in 1829. The house features a chandelier-lit ballroom, Venetian windows, a large dining room, and drawing room requiring substantial royal furniture, as well as a private tennis court. The extensive grounds include several cottages intended for security and nanny staff.
The Waleses have already started renovations, focusing on both minor internal and external updates to accommodate their family needs and provide more privacy for their children, who attend a nearby school. Key renovation details include Kate selecting a 24-seat dining table from a royal furniture store to furnish these larger spaces.
The move to Forest Lodge is a "fresh start" for the family, considered their "forever home." It keeps them close to Lambrook School for their children and near Windsor Castle for royal duties. The home is within a 30-minute drive of Kate Middleton's parents, Carole and Michael Middleton.
The renovations are privately funded by William and Kate, and they will pay rent to the Crown Estate through William's Duchy of Cornwall income. The couple intends to settle long-term at Forest Lodge, even after William becomes king.
It's worth noting that Anmer Hall, a 10-bedroom Georgian country home on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, remains a deeply personal sanctuary for the Wales family, particularly for Kate during her ongoing cancer treatment. The couple continues to spend time at Anmer Hall, which offers a quieter, more relaxed backdrop than their Windsor residences.
Royal expert Ian Pelham Turner stated that the move was unexpected for the neighbours. Interestingly, the Waleses are not planning on maintaining live-in staff at their new home. The £1.5 million renovation in 2001 and the light updates scheduled for this summer are aimed at making Forest Lodge a comfortable and functional family home.
The move to Forest Lodge was prompted by security concerns and to shield the Prince and Princess-and their children-from prying eyes and the pressures of royal life. The Wales family has always cherished Anmer Hall as a wedding gift from Queen Elizabeth, and it remains a favourite among them.
