Revealed: Top Energy-Saving Neighborhoods and Those Lagging Behind in Energy Efficiency

In a recent study conducted by energy experts at Utility Bidder, London has been crowned as the most energy-efficient region in England and Wales. The study, titled "Household Energy Efficiency Index", assessed various factors to determine the energy efficiency of homes across the country.

The study found that London has an energy-efficiency score of 9.33, closely followed by Hackney, London, with a score of 9.62. Other London boroughs such as Newham, Islington, Barking and Dagenham, Southwark, and Wandsworth also feature prominently in the top 10.

James Longley, managing director at Utility Bidder, commented on the findings, stating that home energy efficiency can vary considerably depending on location. He mentioned that Hackney is one of seven London boroughs to make the top 10, demonstrating the commitment of many homeowners in London to making their homes more sustainable.

The South East region in England has the highest average energy efficiency of homes due to newer building standards, more modern housing stock, and substantial investments in energy-saving technologies. This is driven by stricter regional building regulations and higher owner investment in insulation and renewable energy installations compared to other regions in England and Wales.

Knowsley, Merseyside, has the most energy-efficient homes in England and Wales with a score of 9.69. The energy efficiency of Knowsley's homes is due to low energy usage, low CO2 emissions, affordable utility bills, and a high percentage of dwellings rated A-C for energy performance in 2023.

On the other hand, Powys, a region in Wales, has the least energy-efficient homes.

James Longley offered some energy-saving tips, including installing double or triple glazing, using LED bulbs, draught-proofing your home, and installing an air source heat pump. He also emphasised the importance of insulation and renewable energy installations in improving home energy efficiency.

The study used official government data to assess factors like average energy consumption, CO2 emissions, heating costs, and hot water costs. By highlighting the energy efficiency of certain regions and providing practical tips for homeowners, the study aims to encourage more households to take steps towards a more sustainable future.
