Return of the Majestic Mariposas at Desert Botanical Garden's Butterfly Pavilion in September
The Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix is set to host the Majestic Mariposas experience, an immersive butterfly encounter, from September 27 to November 16. This family-friendly event offers a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with over 1,000 butterflies, including Monarch butterflies and other desert-adapted or migratory species native to the Southwest.
At the heart of the Majestic Mariposas experience is the Cohn Family Butterfly Pavilion. Here, visitors can witness a vibrant display of up to 12 different butterfly species fluttering about. It's not uncommon to spot a moth or two among them as well.
Glaiza Boccelli, a special exhibit supervisor at the Desert Botanical Garden, shared that there are approximately 1,200 to 1,500 butterflies in the exhibit at any given time. The butterflies showcased are all diurnal, or daytime, creatures, making for a lively spectacle during the garden's opening hours from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Butterflies are important pollinators, similar to bees, and the Majestic Mariposas experience offers educational signs about their life cycle to help visitors understand their vital role in the ecosystem.
Admission to the Majestic Mariposas experience is included in the membership or general admission visit to the Desert Botanical Garden. The garden is located at 1201 N. Galvin Pkwy. in Phoenix.
A particularly memorable part of the Majestic Mariposas experience is the opportunity to watch butterflies emerge from their chrysalis. This process, often referred to as eclosion, is a fascinating sight, offering a glimpse into the transformation these beautiful creatures undergo.
With over 350 different species of butterflies that can be found in Arizona, the Majestic Mariposas experience promises a captivating and educational journey into the world of these enchanting insects. So, mark your calendars and get ready to immerse yourself in a kaleidoscope of colours and movements at the Majestic Mariposas exhibit at the Desert Botanical Garden.
