Renowned children's writer Allan Ahlberg passes away at the age of 87
Allan Ahlberg, a prolific British children's author, passed away at the age of 87 on Tuesday. Known for his playful rhymes, sharp observations, and gentle humor, Ahlberg authored over 150 books that introduced generations of young children to reading.
Before embarking on his literary career, Ahlberg worked various jobs, including stints as a postman, plumber's mate, and grave digger. It was during his time at teacher training college that he met his wife, illustrator Janet Ahlberg. Their first book, Here are the Brick Street Boys, was published in 1975.
Janet Ahlberg, who passed away in 1994, won the Kate Greenaway Medal twice for her illustrations in Allan's books. She won the award in 1978 for Eat Peach Pear Plum and again in 1991 for The Jolly Christmas Postman.
One of Ahlberg's most innovative works, The Jolly Postman (1986), incorporated postcards and letters in envelopes for children to engage with. Another standout work, Peepo! (1981), offered a baby's-eye-view of the world in an interactive, analogue way, with peep-holes in the pages.
After Janet's death, Allan collaborated with illustrators such as Raymond Briggs and Jessica Ahlberg. He also wrote for adults, penning a tribute to his wife, Janet's Last Book, and two autobiographies: The Boyhood of Burglar Bill and The Bucket.
Allan Ahlberg's books have been described as "true classics" that will be loved by children and families for years to come. Penguin Random House stated that his works introduced generations of young children to reading through simple rhymes, sharp observation, and gentle humor, calling them "mini masterpieces." Francesca Dow, head of children's literature at Penguin Random House, echoed this sentiment, praising Ahlberg's ability to engage very young readers and older children alike.
International Booker prize winner Banu Mushtaq also made a statement about Allan Ahlberg, but further details were not provided.
Allan Ahlberg is survived by his second wife, Vanessa Clarke, his daughter, and two stepdaughters. His books will undoubtedly continue to delight and inspire young readers for many years to come.
Allan Ahlberg's innovative works, such as The Jolly Postman and Peepo!, not only provided entertainment but also integrated culture into home-and-garden spaces, making reading a lifestyle for many families. His collaborative projects with illustrators like Raymond Briggs and Jessica Ahlberg, as well as his solo works for adults, offer insights into his lifestyle and thoughts on various topics, including books and entertainment.
