Refurbished Queen-Katherine-Crown Courtyard Unveiled
In the heart of Stuttgart, a long-awaited schoolyard renovation has been completed, transforming the area into a modern outdoor space that caters to the needs of students. The project, which cost approximately 1.5 million euros, was a collaborative effort between the school administration, Deutsche Bahn AG and its contractor Züblin, the municipal department of public works, and the architectural firm MET Architects.
The new schoolyard, designed with a focus on sustainable development, features sports facilities, movement areas, seating, relaxation zones, and greened elements. The renovation was initiated due to the Stuttgart 21 railway project, which made the schoolyard unusable for students for approximately eight years.
One of the key features of the renovated schoolyard is its separation from the neighbouring park, allowing for more usage by students. This separation also considers the potential impact of the opera house renovation on the school. However, the schoolyard renovation plan does not specify if the relocation of the gymnasium will affect the usage of the new schoolyard by students.
The gymnasium of the Queen Katharina Stift will be relocated due to the renovation of the neighbouring opera house. To accommodate potential future changes, mobile greenery and relocatable play equipment and movement offerings have been incorporated into the schoolyard's design. However, the schoolyard renovation plan does not detail how these relocatable play equipment and movement offerings will be adjusted once the gymnasium is relocated.
The Nesenbach tunnel had to be relocated as part of the schoolyard renovation. The construction period for the renovation lasted about a year, and while a few remaining tasks need to be completed, the schoolyard is still within the original 1.5 million euro renovation budget.
The office Planstatt Senner collaborated with the school on the schoolyard renovation plan, ensuring that the needs of the students were met. The architectural firm MET Architects, known for their sustainable design and optimized spatial programs within existing building volumes, were responsible for the remodeling of the renovated schoolyard.
While the schoolyard renovation plan does not provide information on the timeline for the completion of the remaining tasks or if the mobile greenery and relocatable equipment will be permanent or temporary, the community is excited about this modern, student-friendly outdoor space. The schoolyard renovation is a testament to the power of collaboration and the commitment to providing quality education facilities for students in Stuttgart.
