Reconstruction of Valentinuskapelle in Düppenweiler: Government backs new roof and exterior facelift
The St. Valentin Chapel, a historically significant building with a long history, is set for renovation. This venerable structure, with a rich history dating back to the 12th century, has been destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries. The last major renovation of the chapel was carried out in 2009, with significant support from the citizens of Beckingen. However, the exact year of the most recent renovation of the chapel is not explicitly mentioned in the available documents. According to the 2025 Beckingen official bulletin, renovations and restorations of old and new buildings have been ongoing since 2002.
The Ministry of Environment, Climate, Mobility, Agriculture and Consumer Protection has allocated a substantial sum of 42,712.93 euros for the renovation of the Valentine's Chapel. The Ministry of the Interior is covering a further 25% of the total costs, amounting to 16,428.05 euros, while the municipality of Beckingen's own contribution is 6,571.22 euros.
The Ministry of Environment is contributing 65% of the total eligible costs for the renovation. This includes 18,366.56 euros from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) and 24,346.37 euros from funds from the Saarland within the framework of the "Directive for the Promotion of Sustainable Village Development in the Saarland".
In the course of the now planned renovation, a style-appropriate re-roofing of the slate roof, repair work on the gutter, restoration of the roof cross, and painting work on the facade are planned.
The chapel's calendar highlight is the annual pilgrimage on the Sunday after Valentine's Day. Beyond religious activities, the chapel is also a hub for cultural activities in Beckingen.
