Recognition of Outstanding Outdoor Safety Messages Given to the MSC
Mountain Safety Council's Successful Year in Marketing and Safety
The Mountain Safety Council (MSC) has had a remarkable year, with several achievements in marketing and safety initiatives.
In the TVNZ NZ Marketing Awards 2020, the MSC was a finalist in the Not-for-Profit category, recognising their exceptional work in the non-profit sector. The council's duck shooting safety campaign, titled 'Let Old Habits Die, Not Your Mates', was one of the standout entries. This campaign, inspired by the Australian Responsible Hunting program, aimed to reduce firearms incidents during the duck hunting season. The campaign achieved incredible results, making history as the first duck shooting season since 2004 without a person being shot by themselves or another hunter.
The MSC's Operations Manager, Watson, expressed pride in the team and their high-quality work. Watson believes the MSC consistently makes a difference, despite being a small team. The awards serve as a way for the MSC to receive external validation and compare across sectors.
Another significant achievement for the MSC was winning a bronze award for the design of the New Zealand Avalanche Advisory (NZAA) website. The objective of rebuilding the NZAA was to present complex information in a simple and easy-to-use manner. To ensure the website was fit for purpose, MSC collaborated with Somar Digital, their digital product partner, and engaged the alpine community in the design process. The NZAA website was also named as a finalist in the Designers Institute of New Zealand Best Design Awards.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the MSC launched a new website, covid19outdoors.nz, to communicate acceptable outdoor recreation during these challenging times. The new MSC website was designed to provide an easy-to-use hub that is relevant to people's specific situation. This website was developed within ten days due to support from partner organizations, including Water Safety NZ and Somar Digital.
Watson expressed joy at being recognized for their work to improve outdoor safety. He believes that the MSC's approach to improving safety places people at the center, with everything they do being driven by clear evidence and aimed at effective user engagement. The MSC's dedication to safety and user-centered design has resulted in a successful year, and they look forward to continuing their work in the future.
