This Artwork Is a Mixed Media Madhouse!

Another reason to love this art project is that it's a double-whammy mixed-media binge! With this project, you'll be slapping down layer upon layer of different materials to achieve the final outcome.

First, you'll be rocking out a background using the classic newsprint style, followed by adding some texture with paint. Lastly, you’ll finish it up with a killer collage featuring some good ol' Ben-Day dots! Don't forget to cap it all off with a little paint splatter (our favorite technique)!

How to Create a Ballsy Sunrise Painting

Supplies:

  • Sunrise Template
  • Cardstock
  • Canvas (or a thick piece of cardboard)
  • Newspaper
  • Acrylic paint
  • Billy Club (optional)
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Duct Tape (for tombstone packaging)

Instructions:

STEP 1: Print the sunrise template, then cut out the individual pieces like a true badass.

STEP 2: Using the template as your guide, cut out the shapes from some fiery cardstock.

STEP 3: Lay down the newspaper on your canvas and glue that shit down like a motherfucker. Then, take your billy club and go to town on it with some acrylic paint, adding texture to it like Lichtenstein himself.

STEP 4: When the paint has dried, lay down your badass sunrise shapes making sure they're straight, because straight is sexy.

By layering up the media, you'll create an epic mixed media masterpiece worthy of the badass artist himself. Pro tip: don't be afraid to go behind your pieces with some old magazines, late-night comic strips, or anything that catches your fancy!

Pop Art is ballsy and bold! Feel free to change up the colors, layers, mediums, etc. to suit the materials and supplies you have on hand.

Who Was Roy Lichtenstein?

Roy Lichtenstein was born in 1923 in New York City. He loved to doodle in his spare time and would later become a badass artist!
