Queen Mary's Dolls' House: A Miniature Masterpiece of Detail and Craftsmanship
Queen Camilla Unveils New Additions to Historic Dollhouse During State Visit
Queen Camilla and U.S. First Lady Melania Trump recently made a joint appearance at a special location during a State Visit to the UK – Queen Mary's Dolls' House, located within the hallowed walls of Windsor Castle.
Built between 1921 and 1924, this extraordinary miniature masterpiece showcased British craftsmanship in the years following World War I. The dollhouse, which stands as the largest in the world, boasts a scale of 1:12, meaning everything within it is shrunk down to 1/12th of its actual size while maintaining the same proportions.
The dollhouse is a treasure trove of intricate details, from fully stocked kitchens and servants' quarters to a wine cellar, saloon, and even a garage. Highlights include miniature Crown Jewels inset with real gems, and tiny working appliances such as a sewing machine and a vacuum cleaner, including a miniature Hoover vacuum as one of its original miniatures.
Queen Mary's Dolls' House has been a popular attraction for visitors since it was first put on permanent display at Windsor Castle in 1925. Over the years, contributions to the project have come from more than 1,500 artists, writers, and woodworkers.
In 2024, during the centennial celebration year, a new collection of miniature books was intentionally installed in the dollhouse, commissioned by Queen Camilla from British authors and playwrights like Phillppa Gregory, Tom Stoppard, and Lucy Caldwell. Queen Camilla has taken special interest in the dollhouse and has commissioned new literary works to be installed in the miniature library, which already contains specially commissioned works by J.M. Barrie, A.A. Milne, Thomas Hardy, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The new collection includes picture books such as The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler and A Tiny Ghost Story by Anthony Horowitz.
Rachel King, a news writer at Town & Country, reported on the event. Before joining Town & Country, she spent nearly a decade as an editor at Fortune. Her work covering travel and lifestyle has appeared in Forbes, Observer, Robb Report, Cruise Critic, and Cool Hunting, among others. Rachel King can be followed on Instagram.
Entry to Queen Mary's Dolls' House is included with a ticket to Windsor Castle, and advance booking is extremely recommended due to high demand. Visitors are encouraged to take a closer look at this remarkable piece of British history and appreciate the attention to detail that went into creating this miniature marvel.
