In the heart of Timisoara, the city's upcoming celebrations for Timisoara Day will see a unique event unfold. The Out of the Box II cultural project, a continuation of its successful first edition in 2024, is set to culminate in a free public exhibition downtown.

Led by visual artist Regina Damian, this project is a blend of contemporary art and the social reintegration of people in detention. Thirty inmates from Timișoara Penitentiary are participating in artistic workshops throughout July, under the guidance of artists and cultural facilitators.

The project aims to create a positive impact in the lives of those in detention, support social inclusion, and strengthen community cohesion in Timisoara. It seeks to bridge the gap between the prison system and the wider community through dialogue, inclusion, and artistic expression.

By engaging inmates in contemporary art practices, the project provides a creative outlet and means of self-expression, helping transform identity and reduce stigma. Facilitating artistic collaboration between inmates and external artists or community members fosters dialogue and mutual understanding.

The public exhibition will not only raise public awareness about the realities of incarceration but also encourage empathy. It offers inmates a space for artistic expression and a real chance at social reintegration. The project primarily seeks to address current cultural needs and revive interest in art and creativity, especially among marginalized groups.

The Out of the Box II project is funded by the Municipality of Timisoara through the Center for Cultural Projects. It is held in partnership with the National Administration of Penitentiaries and the Timișoara 2023 - European Capital of Culture Association.

The project primarily seeks to encourage self-expression and spark new ways of thinking about one's place in society. By offering participants a creative outlet and a space for self-reflection and identity rebuilding, it aims to foster personal and social growth.

The unique public exhibition, showcasing artwork created by inmates, gives insight into a lifestyle that promotes dialogue, mutual understanding, and empathy, mirroring the objectives of a sustainable and inclusive community.

Via this innovative project, the city of Timisoara emphasizes its commitment to supporting both social reintegration and sustaining a lifestyle that strives for the well-being of its citizens and the environment, embodying the essence of a sustainable-living lifestyle.
