Pressure mounts on camping sites around Lake Constance
In the picturesque region of Lower Lindau, campsites have been bustling with visitors from around Europe, with campers from Switzerland, the Netherlands, and neighboring countries such as France, Austria, and Italy making a significant presence.
According to the Bavarian State Office of Statistics, the first half of the year saw over 18 million guests visit the Free State, booking around 46 million overnight stays. This trend is particularly noticeable in the camping sector, where a significant increase of 38.7 percent in guests and 54 percent in overnight stays was recorded.
Two of the most popular campsites, Park-Camping Lindau and Gitzenweiler Hof, have reported numbers above last year's level this season. Christiane Shibli from the Nonnenhorn campsite also reported a positive conclusion, stating they could have accommodated ten times as many guests as they have pitches.
Weather remains a crucial factor for occupancy, with vacationers booking more weather-dependently. Spontaneous cancellations occur in case of poor weather.
The Gitzenweiler Hof campsite is planning a new multifunctional building, scheduled for completion by May 2028. This development will include a restaurant, modern sanitary facilities, an event hall, and indoor play areas for all age groups. The estimated investment volume is around five million euros.
Heidrun Müller, owner of Gitzenweiler Hof, aims to maintain diversity on the site so that 'everyone finds their spot,' while also not overcrowding it. To achieve this, the capacity has been reduced over the years to 650 pitches, with 300 reserved for seasonal campers.
The caretaker of Eschbach campsite, Holger Jeske, reports that the season this year was excellent. To preserve the greenery, vehicle size at Eschbach is limited, with only vehicles up to 7.50 meters in length allowed. This ensures a more open and less cramped feel, with only 42 pitches and two small tent areas.
Holger Jeske also mentioned that this season they had guests from Korea, the United Kingdom, and Australia. The majority of guests at the four campsites in the lower Lindau district, however, come from Germany, particularly from Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.
Park-Camping Lindau is focusing on winter camping to make year-round use of the site, offering it for two years now, including during the Christmas holidays and into the new year. Limiting vehicle size at Eschbach campsite preserves the greenery, as heavy vehicles could leave ruts and damage the grass when the ground is wet.
Despite the success of the season, more specific data on the most frequent countries of origin of guests on campsites outside Germany is not readily available, as it would require local tourism statistics not present in the current results. Given the region's location near the borders, common neighboring countries could include Austria, Switzerland, and possibly France or Italy based on regional tourism patterns.
