Preparing in advance can significantly extend your enjoyment during this extended weekend
Preparing for a Safe and Enjoyable Bushwalk in Wellington
The Wellington Anniversary weekend, taking place from January 20, 2022, offers a perfect opportunity for a short bushwalk, according to the Mana Stream Coalition (MSC) Chief Executive, who emphasizes the importance of thorough planning for a safe adventure.
MetService forecasts sunny settled weather for most of the weekend, with a touch of rain. Northwest winds will pick up briefly overnight on Saturday before a small amount of wet weather on Sunday in the Tararuas. By Sunday, the winds will drop off and remain light on Monday. Overnight temperatures will be in the mid to low teens, with daytime highs expected to be around 20°C.
Saturday is predicted to be the best day of the weekend for outdoor activities, with the Tararuas offering a favourable climate. However, it's essential to be aware that the weather in different parts of the Wellington region can vary significantly.
To ensure a safe and enjoyable bushwalk, Daisley advises Wellingtonians to start early and finish early to avoid walking in the heat. It's also crucial to pack essential items such as extra water, a jacket, correct footwear, a first aid kit, communications device, and food for long hot days.
Daisley encourages users to understand their capabilities and skills and have a 'plan B' in case of weather changes. The NZ Land Safety Code, which includes choosing the right trip for you, understanding the weather, packing warm clothes and extra food, sharing your plans and taking ways to get help, and taking care of yourself and each other, is an invaluable resource for keeping safe during outdoor activities in the Wellington region.
The MSC's free "Plan My Walk" app can assist users in finding local tracks, planning their journey, and sharing their plans. By following these guidelines and preparing adequately, you can make the most of the Wellington Anniversary weekend's beautiful weather and enjoy a memorable bushwalk.
