Strawberry Harvest in Brandenburg Affected by Late Frosts

Updates on self-picking availability are crucial due to potential closures.

Strawberry pickers in Brandenburg's fields are advised to verify opening hours, as temporary closures are possible across various farms. Several farms maintain hotlines and provide updates on their websites regarding the current status. The late frosts that occurred in May have affected the harvest in some areas, leading to delayed self-picking seasons. sod

Neumann's Harvest Garden in Potsdam remains closed for self-picking due to the late frost which froze the initial blossoms, preventing any immediate harvest. Their anticipation is that the harvest may only be available at least three weeks from now.

Berlin Berry Garden has closed its gardens in Oranienburg, Schönfließ, Hoppegarten, and Gatow due to a lack of ripe fruits. The company notes that closures may occur again if there are insufficient ripe fruits, as they can only stay open for as long as the crops remain ready for picking.

The Pomona Garden Building operation in Ahrensfelde/Elisenau employs a WhatsApp channel to inform customers about their thriving varieties and current opening hours. Business owner, Reiner Matthes, has expressed his intention to improve the protection of his fields against climate risks in the future, as large sections of his strawberry crop were destroyed due to the late frost.

Berlin Brandenburg Fruit GmbH also encourages customers to verify self-picking opening hours, with temporary closures possible in the initial days to allow the fruits time to ripen.

The cultivation of strawberries in Brandenburg is witnessing a decrease, according to the Garden Building Association Berlin-Brandenburg. Reduced yields, particularly in open field cultivation, have put pressure on approximately 60 gardening businesses in Brandenburg that grow strawberries, due to rising costs for operating materials, energy, labor, and legal requirements in plant protection.

These farmers might adopt alternative methods to protect their crops from climate risks, such as agrivoltaics, frost protection sprinklers, or variety selection and adaptive crop management strategies in order to enhance resilience and sustainability in their operations.

  1. The late frosts last May have resulted in difficulties for several community policies regarding employment, as the affected strawberry farms may need to adjust their employment policies to match the delayed self-picking seasons.
  2. As the food-and-drink sector relies heavily on the harvest season for strawberries, the importance of adapting home-and-garden policies to better protect crops against climate risks becomes increasingly crucial in maintaining a sustainable lifestyle for farmers in Brandenburg.
