Permanent Display Established: German Sword Museum Unveils New Showcase by Me FECIT SOLINGEN
The Blade City of Solingen, Germany, has unveiled the first part of a new permanent exhibition called "ME FECIT SOLINGEN - Blades: City: History" at the German Blade Museum. This is the largest project at the museum since its reopening in 1991.
The exhibition offers visitors an immersive journey through Solingen's centuries-old tradition of blade making. It provides insights into the development and significance of Solingen's blade production from the Middle Ages and Early Modern Period until around 1700. The scenographic implementation of the exhibition was won over by the internationally active exhibition office fact and fiction, based in Cologne.
The "ME FECIT SOLINGEN" exhibition is the first step towards a comprehensive renewal of the 30-year-old permanent exhibition of the Blade Museum. The exhibition spans over 300 square meters and includes interactive exhibits, large-scale illustrations, touchscreens, and an overview of today's Solingen blade manufacturers.
In the foyer of the new permanent exhibition, a display case showcases over 300 knives, swords, and blades from around the world and from the Stone Age to the present day. The exhibition project was mainly funded by the "Friends of the German Blade Museum" e. V., with further support from several foundations and organizations.
The exhibition also features a historical, ten-meter-wide map of the Bergisches Land, hands-on demonstrations of blade production, and a fencing station for visitors to try swords. The next phase of the renewal, the children's exhibition "Dragon and Magic Sword", is scheduled to open on April 4, 2025.
Solingen's rise to fame as the "City of Blades" is rooted in centuries-old craftsmanship in blade making dating back to the 13th century, industrialization in the 19th century that expanded production capacity, innovations in materials and manufacturing techniques, the establishment of globally recognized cutlery brands originating from Solingen, and a concentration of specialized manufacturers producing a wide range of cutting tools and blades.
For more information, visit the Blade Museum's website at *https://www.klingenmuseum.de*. The museum is closed on Mondays, and the opening hours for Tuesdays are 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, while for Wednesdays to Sundays, they are 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
In the comprehensive renovation of the Blade Museum, visitors can now explore the "ME FECIT SOLINGEN" exhibition, immersing themselves in Solingen's home-and-garden lifestyle centered around blade making, spanning from the Middle Ages to the Early Modern Period. With interactive exhibits and displays of over 300 knives, swords, and blades from various eras, this lifestyle and home-and-garden revitalization offers a unique insight into Solingen's rich history and tradition, further evolving into a children's exhibition in 2025.
