New coffeehouse has been established in Mainz
In the heart of Mainz's old town, opposite the stunning St. Ignaz Church, a new gastronomy establishment is set to bring a fresh and inviting atmosphere. "Freude", meaning joy in German, will be opening its doors on August 15th, 2025, at Kapuzinerstraße 29.
The café is the brainchild of Franziska Klimas, who has long harboured the dream of her own establishment. Having lived in Mainz since 2007, Klimas has now made that dream a reality by renovating a 17th-century building to suit her new concept. She has transformed the old inn "Willems" into a cozy café, affectionately referring to the area in front of St. Ignaz Church as the "Piazza of Joy".
During the day, "Freude" will operate as a café, offering a variety of dishes from breakfast items, cakes, salads, and lunches such as soups and quiche. Non-alcoholic alternatives will also be available. In the evenings, "Freude" will transform into a bar, focusing on Aperol, spritz varieties, gin and tonics, local beers, and wines. Three out of the four wineries providing wines for "Freude" are local.
The café boasts approximately 55 seats on the ground floor and in the old wine cellar. During the summer months, there will be 24 seats at ten tables in the outdoor area. "Freude" will be open from 10 am to 10 pm, and from Thursday to Sunday.
