Navigating New Zealand's Great Outdoors with a Paper Map

Exploring the breathtaking landscapes of New Zealand's great outdoors just got easier with some helpful tips from Adam, a Partnership Advisor with years of experience.

According to Adam, some of the most popular tramping and hiking routes in New Zealand include the Routeburn Track, Tongariro Alpine Crossing, Brewster Hut Track, Rocky Mountain/Diamond Lake Track, and Mt Iron Loop Track. These trails are renowned for their scenic beauty and popularity among hikers.

For those seeking a physical map for their adventure, local tramping or hunting stores are a great place to start. Alternatively, you can find a map retailer to cater to your needs. Once you have your map, keeping it accessible is essential. A plastic or waterproof bag in a side pocket of your pack is a practical solution.

Adam suggests identifying a limiting feature, such as a river or ridgeline, on the map at the beginning of the day or after breaks. This helps you determine if you may have gone too far. He also recommends referring to the map at least once an hour to assess the terrain around you and compare it to the map's features.

Knowing your pace count (the number of times your left foot hits the ground across 100m) is important for keeping track of distance while navigating. Maintaining regular knowledge of your location and the route ahead is crucial for effective navigation.

Using a paper map has many benefits, as it allows you to associate the terrain with the map, an essential practice even with well-formed tracks. The navigation section of the Bushcraft Manual can also be explored for more detailed information.

For those seeking additional resources, the E-Learning Tool is available to learn more about navigation skills. There are also videos on Using a Compass, Reading a Map, and Finding a Bearing in the How-to Get Outdoors Series. You can find the map of your choice on LINZ's Map Chooser.
