Motorola's Razr models outpaced Samsung's foldable devices in shipments during Q2 of 2025.
In the rapidly evolving world of technology, the third quarter of 2025 has seen a significant resurgence in the foldable smartphone market, with Samsung leading the charge. According to recent reports, the South Korean tech giant is boosting production to meet the high demand for the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7.
However, the Q2 2025 report by Counterpoint Research painted a slightly different picture. Motorola had a stronger showing than Samsung, with the Motorola Razr (2025) series dominating the US market and accounting for a 28% market share of global foldable smartphone shipments.
The Galaxy Z Fold 7, despite its production challenges, continues to be a hit, with its demand outpacing supply. This is in stark contrast to Samsung's Q2 2024 market share, which stood at 21%.
The US market itself saw a doubled market share of foldable smartphones in Q2 2025, with China accounting for most of the global increase in shipments. Other OEMs, including Google, occupy an "other" category that accounted for 33% of global foldable smartphone shipments in Q2 2025.
Motorola's success can be attributed to the highly rated and reasonably priced Razr (2025) series. The series, which was officially launched in April 2025, boasts a full-cover display for two generations, setting it apart from Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 6, which retains its mini cover display.
Despite the fierce competition, both Samsung and Motorola, along with other players in the market, have a lot of work to do to establish a strong foothold in the global foldable smartphone market. The Galaxy Z Fold 7, while popular, has been criticised for its repair-unfriendly nature, which could potentially impact its long-term success.
As the foldable smartphone market continues to grow, with global shipments increasing 45% YoY in Q2 2025, it will be interesting to see how these giants of the tech world navigate the challenges and capitalise on the opportunities that lie ahead.
