Luxurious Estate Showcases History and Modern Wealth: A historic barn, once part of the Mayflower ship, gracefully adorns a spacious mansion, while a pristine £10m Ferrari sits elegantly within the living room.
In the heart of Buckinghamshire, a grand, modern home named Old Jordans is making headlines. With a guide price of £15 million, this property is one of the most expensive in the Home Counties, being sold off-market by Knight Frank. But what sets Old Jordans apart from other high-end properties is a fascinating piece of history hidden within its walls.
The barn at Old Jordans is said to incorporate timbers from the Mayflower, the iconic ship that carried 102 settlers on their journey to the New World in the last days of summer 1620. This intriguing claim was first proposed by James Rendel Harris, a biblical scholar, in the early 20th century.
The Mayflower, a 90ft, 180-ton ship built in the early 17th century, was registered in Harwich and bought by Christopher Jones in 1608. After an abortive start in August, the voyage truly got underway from Plymouth on 16 September and landed at Cape Cod on November 21. However, tragedy struck as half of the settlers and crew on the Mayflower died due to disease, terrible conditions, and malnutrition.
Despite the hardships, the Mayflower's passengers went on to establish the Plymouth Colony, which would later become the city of Plymouth, Massachusetts. The Mayflower stayed put for several months at Plymouth Rock, where most of the settlers began their new lives.
Fast forward to the early 20th century, and it's believed that timbers from the Mayflower were used to build a barn on a farmstead in Buckinghamshire. This claim was further supported by Wilbur, an academic who proposed this theory in the 1930s.
Historic England simply states that the Grade II-listed barn is 'held by some to incorporate timbers from the Mayflower in which the Pilgrim Fathers sailed in New England in 1620.' However, it's important to note that this is not an officially confirmed fact.
The interiors of Old Jordans are bright, modern, and have a look and feel similar to a high-end hotel. The house boasts 10 bedrooms and 10 bathrooms, providing ample space for a comfortable living.
Interestingly, Old Jordans also houses a stunningly rare early 1970s Ferrari 312PB in one of its reception rooms. However, this Ferrari is not included in the sale. A Ferrari 312 PB, dating to the early 1970s, sold via Sotheby's for £10 million a couple of years ago, providing a glimpse into the value of such rare automobiles.
The Mayflower Barn is included in the sale of Old Jordans, adding a unique historical touch to this already impressive property. Whether the timbers are indeed from the Mayflower or not, the barn stands as a testament to the rich history that Old Jordans holds.
