Local animal caretakers relocate in Griesheim

In the heart of Griesheim, a change has been introduced to help combat an environmental issue. Last week, six donkeys – Bruno, Beppo, Frodo, Ferdinand, Winnie Puuh, and Fred – were relocated to the forest area west of Grießheimer Bolzplatz.

The Griesheimer city forest, unfortunately, is currently grappling with the effects of heatwaves and the emerald ash borer, leading to the death of a significant portion of the tree population. This, in turn, has created ideal conditions for the spread of land crabgrass, a pesky invasive species that poses a problem as it takes away light from small plants that will later become trees or shrubs.

The donkeys, however, are not just any animals; they are natural grazers. Their presence in the forest helps control the overgrowth of land crabgrass, allowing native plants and desired vegetation to grow more effectively. By feeding on the invasive crabgrass, the donkeys reduce its spread and dominance, which aids in maintaining the ecological balance of the forest floor, promoting biodiversity.

Moreover, because donkeys tend to graze less aggressively than some other livestock, they help manage the undergrowth without damaging the overall vegetation structure. This makes them an ideal choice for the sensitive environment of the city forest.

The donkeys have been in use on various forest areas in Griesheim since 2022, proving to be a successful addition to the forest management.

Meanwhile, in a different part of the city, the "Teddy Hospital" at the Clinic in Darmstadt continues to serve its purpose, unrelated to the forest issues. This unique facility is designed to help children overcome their fear of doctors and medical procedures by providing play equipment for children's toys, including syringes, bandages, and dressings. It also serves as a beneficial learning ground for medical students, offering them a fun and engaging environment to practice their skills.

Elsewhere in Weiterstadt, a trailer with play equipment for traffic education is now available for elementary schools and kindergartens. This initiative aims to promote safety and awareness among young children.

However, vandalism on a playground in Weiterstadt has been affecting other playgrounds in the city, prompting the city administration to increase security measures. No new emergency contact numbers or security measures are mentioned in relation to the "Teddy Hospital."

Visitors to the Griesheimer city forest are welcome to see the donkeys, but they are asked not to feed them. In case of an emergency involving the donkeys, visitors should contact the Landscape Maintenance Office Stürz at 0160 / 99 65 69 94.

The availability of the trailer was made possible by an engaged resident of Weiterstadt and a nationwide action. The "Teddy Hospital," on the other hand, remains a beacon of comfort for children in need, located at the Clinic in Darmstadt.

  1. In the Griesheimer city forest, the introduction of donkeys, which are natural grazers, has benefited the environmental-science aspect, as their presence helps control the spread of invasive species like land crabgrass, allowing native plants to grow more effectively, promoting biodiversity.
  2. While the donkeys contribute to home-and-garden maintenance in the city forest, other initiatives like the "Teddy Hospital" at the Clinic in Darmstadt focus on improving children's lifestyles by helping them overcome their fear of doctors in a fun, learning environment.
