Kunstpalast Düsseldorf to experience a resurgence in 2025

The Kunstpalast Düsseldorf is gearing up for an exciting year ahead, with a series of captivating exhibitions that promise to bring a fresh perspective to the city's art scene.

In a commendable initiative, Kathrin Dubois, the head of the Gemäldegalerie, aims to shine a spotlight on forgotten female artists. While no specific artist has been announced for the September exhibition, Dubois plans to showcase 30 female 19th-century artists who were excluded from the Düsseldorf Academy.

One such artist who will be making a significant splash is Elias Sime. Known only in specialist circles, Sime will have a large-scale exhibition at the Kunstpalast from 12 February to 1 June 2025. His works reflect on the mass consumption of technical parts, their production, and their impact.

Another noteworthy exhibition is "The Secret Power of Scents", curated by Robert Müller-Grünow, a scent expert and author. This scent-based exhibition, running from October 2025 to May 26, will create a unique olfactory experience using surprises and diffusers.

Hans-Peter Feldmann, a renowned Düsseldorf conceptual artist, will also have an exhibition of his paintings, objects, and installations at the Kunstpalast from 18 September to 11 January. The artist himself will participate in the planning before his death, making this a truly special event.

The "Hidden Treasures" exhibition, featuring small images from the early work of Gerhard Richter, will run alongside these exhibitions. Due to expected rush, the opening hours for this exhibition have been extended on certain days, and online ticket purchase is recommended to avoid long wait times.

Gerhard Richter's never-before-seen images are also part of an exhibition at the Kunstpalast. These works, which have never been displayed publicly, are sure to be a highlight of the year.

In addition to these exhibitions, visitors can look forward to interactive experiences. For instance, Tony Cragg's sculptures will be touchable, allowing visitors to engage with the art in a unique way. Düsseldorf florists will also arrange suitable or provocative bouquets inspired by the masterpieces of the collection from 20 to 30 March.

The Kunstpalast will also host exhibitions that tackle social and political issues. "Too Much Future" from the Peters-Messer collection is socially critical and will run until 5 January. Meanwhile, "Sex Now", announced for the autumn, will run from 5 September 2025 to January 26, featuring artists, designers, and activists of all genders showing "visions of a world where sexuality exists free from stigma, shame, and prejudices".

Erotic fantasies in "Sex Now" range from Japanese woodblock prints to latex fashion for special tastes. Another thought-provoking exhibition, "MAMA", explores the image of the mother between the Virgin Mary and Chancellor Merkel, curated by three young women and featuring 120 works from various periods of art history.

The "Hidden Treasures" exhibition of Gerhard Richter's works, originally scheduled to end on 2 February, has extended its opening hours due to the expected rush. This, along with the record-breaking 500,000 visitors attracted by Felix Krämer, General Director of the Kunstpalast Düsseldorf, in 2024, indicates a bright future for the city's art scene.

With such a diverse lineup of exhibitions, the Kunstpalast Düsseldorf is set to captivate art enthusiasts from all walks of life. Whether you're a seasoned art connoisseur or a curious first-timer, there's something for everyone at the Kunstpalast.
