Japanese Moss Balls: A Traditional Art Form From Japan
In a unique opportunity for plant enthusiasts, award-winning florist Takeshi Nakamura will be teaching a class on basic Kokedama techniques.
Kokedama, or moss-balls, are Japanese moss arrangements that have been popular for centuries. These living moss balls are simple yet impactful, and can spruce up any section of your home.
Each participant in the class will create a single Kokedama arrangement. To start, participants will learn the techniques for mixing soil and binding the roots. Carefully binding moss and shaping soil are essential steps in creating the traditional Japanese values of simplicity, balance, and harmony with nature in this art form.
Takeshi Nakamura, born in 1963, has a rich background in floral design. He attended the Florist Training Institute in Tokyo and studied under the two-time world champion of floral design, Mr. Pitt Fandelberg, in Holland. He also received certification in the Ikenobo school of traditional flower arrangement.
Over the years, Takeshi Nakamura has realised the floral needs of many clients, including many American and Japanese celebrities. He has won numerous awards for his work in Japan, including gold prizes in the Japan Flower Network and the Nippon Flower Designers' Association exhibitions.
Despite not being specified to have any relation to the Kokedama class, Takeshi Nakamura's expertise in floral design and traditional Japanese techniques make him an ideal instructor for this class.
Each participant will receive a small ceramic plate to take home, ready for their newly created Kokedama to thrive indoors with regular watering. Kokedama can be a part of the "no-pot" garden form known as ne-arai, which emphasises the simplicity and harmony with nature that is at the heart of this art form.
Whether you're a seasoned plant enthusiast or just starting out, this Kokedama class offers a chance to learn from a master of floral design and create your own piece of living artwork.
