Denoora Lyu, a 22-year-old student, came across this mind-boggling situation when she returned to her apartment with her boyfriend, William Qu. To their dismay, they found Dylan Patrick Yelkovan, 30, casually strolling around their place, only clad in a pair of shorts.

The apartment lay strewn with Yelkovan's belongings, carelessly scattered across the sofa, desk, and kitchen counter. The brazen houseguest seemed unfazed by their sudden appearance and made no immediate attempt to flee.

Panic ensued as Denoora realized she was indeed in her apartment. She expressed feeling shaken, taken aback by the situation, and hoping the intruder didn't have a weapon. When confronted, Yelkovan calmly collected his things, nonchalantly moving from room to room. He eventually exited the apartment via the balcony, suggesting this might have been his point of entry.

Denoora believes Yelkovan was living in their apartment while they were away, having even unpacked all their boxes and using their belongings. He even wore some of William's stained clothes and used his bank card. Thankfully, the bank refunded the stolen money, but the couple had to foot a $2000 bill for professional cleaning and hotel costs during that time.

Yelkovan was later arrested with the help of the building manager. The couple's apartment was being leased by a friend who had gone away for the university summer, with the intention of using it as temporary accommodation during the new semester.

Detailed statistics on uninvited home entry incidents in student apartments are scant, but general crime trends suggest that student apartments could be at risk, particularly those lacking security systems. Campus crime and residential burglaries occur most often during the day when no one is present[5]. Keeping an eye on local crime trends and implementing security measures can help reduce such occurrences.

  1. Home Invasions: Over 1.65 million home invasions occur annually in the U.S. (FBI)
  2. Campus Crime: University of Houston posts a Daily Crime Log, but specific data on student apartment intrusions is not provided.
  3. Burglary Timing and Security: Most burglaries happen during the day (FBI) and when no one is present (75% residential burglaries).
  4. Security Measures: Only about 25% of Americans have residential security systems, increasing the likelihood of targeting unprotected homes (FBI).
  5. In light of the shocking incident where a stranger invaded a University of Sydney couple's home, it's crucial to stay updated on local lifestyle news, including home-and-garden matters, to strengthen home security.
  6. As general-news coverage highlights, incidents of crime and justice, such as home invasions, are prevalent, making it essential for homeowners to also keep tabs on crime-and-justice reports to safeguard their living spaces.
