Harmonious Habitat for the Aras at the Bird Park - A Residential Haven for these Feathered Creatures
In the heart of Solingen, Germany, the Bird and Animal Park is home to a lively collection of Macaw pairs, each with their unique stories and personalities.
Heinz and Heidrun, the parents of Michael and Heinrich, have been part of the park for over 20 years. Not much is known about their past, but it is suspected that they were wild-caught and may have had several previous owners. Despite their difficult past, Heinz and Heidrun seem content and show lively behavior.
Dora, a two-year-old Yellow-breasted Macaw, is full of vitality and curiosity. She formed her pair about half a year ago with Michael, a Macaw with reddish plumage. Dora's intelligence is evident in her collaborative work with one of the keepers, learning to sort stamps into different shapes.
Dora and Michael's enclosure provides ample space for climbing and playing, with numerous branches for using their powerful beaks. In the evenings or when it's cooler, Dora and Michael retreat to their warm house where they can snuggle together. Next spring, the keepers plan to introduce Dora and Michael to the other pair, Heinrich and Naomi.
Heinrich, with his distinctive bright red plumage supplemented by numerous yellow parts, and Naomi, shining in a deep dark red, make a striking pair. Naomi is already quite elderly; she came to the park years ago from a poor living situation and now lives happily with Heinrich.
Michael previously had a partner named Rosa, but they were separated due to conflicts. Rosa, an impressive macaw but difficult to care for, didn't get along with other animals.
Janett Heinrich, the limited animal keeper, took care of Michael and Heinrich because their parents didn't care for their offspring. Heinrich has a slightly crooked beak, but this doesn't hinder his eating - regular vet visits ensure he has no problems.
The Solingen Bird and Animal Park currently houses three enclosures for Macaw pairs. The park's Blue and Yellow Macaw Exhibit, mentioned in a note dated August 1, 2019, is one of them. However, no additional details were provided about the macaws' history, breeding status, or current condition.
A little anecdote on the side: When keeper André Hartig was in the enclosure, he greeted the older bird Naomi with the words: "Well, Grandma?" Thus, Naomi got her name.
