Hamburg welcome cold marriages

Hamburg Weddings Brave the Weather: Half of the Marriages Take Place in Winter - Hamburg Tops in German Winter Weddings

Embrace the chill, Hamburgers! Only about 48% of marriages in the city are summer weddings. On the contrary, most Hamburgers tie the knot in the winter months of December to February. These findings come from statistics analyzed by the German Press Agency, combining data from the federal and state statistical offices. The statistics only apply to legal, civil weddings, not religious ones, for example.

Hamburg Weddings Face the Stormy Weather

From 2019 to 2023, nearly 13% of all marriages in Germany took place in August. Close behind follow September and July. Overall, more than 60% of German marriages take place in the five warmer months of May to September.

Only 10% of Hamburg marriages occur in the wedding month of August. Hamburg takes the lead in Germany with 20% of marriages happening in the winter months of December to February.

Less Marrying in Hamburg

According to the German Federal Statistics Office, 4,499 marriages were performed in Hamburg in 2023. The number of marriages in Hamburg has decreased from 2,000 more two decades ago. Potential reasons could be marriages taking place in the surrounding area, such as Schleswig-Holstein.

Why Fewer Marriages in Hamburg?

Hamburgers might be exchanging vows outside the city limit. They often get married in the surrounding areas, for example, Schleswig-Holstein.
