Grilling enthusiasts on a sunlit adventure: Following the Grill Diplomats
In the vibrant city of Cologne, a group of dedicated individuals are making a significant impact on the environment and park-goers' experiences – the Grill-Scouts. Comprising around 25 individuals, these eco-warriors patrol the city's parks every weekend and on holidays during the summer, clad in neon-orange clothing and carrying trash bags.
The Grill-Scouts' mission is to work on behalf of the Cologne Waste Management Authority, approaching people who are grilling in the parks to discuss proper waste disposal methods. Vera Drewke, one of the Grill-Scouts, often encounters student groups and informs them about in-ground containers for waste disposal.
Their approach is casual, non-confrontational, and focused on education. By engaging directly with visitors, they aim to raise awareness and influence behavior, creating a cleaner and more sustainable park environment. This proactive visitor interaction and guidance stand in contrast to more traditional waste management systems that primarily depend on infrastructure or reactive cleanup.
The response to the Grill-Scouts in Cologne has been overwhelmingly positive. As they walk up to 20 kilometers on a single day, they have had over 5,286 contacts last year, distributing 31,399 trash bags annually to help keep the city's parks clean.
Unfortunately, public grilling has been a contentious issue in many German cities due to littering and smoke nuisance. In Berlin and Hamburg, residents have started petitions and imposed high fines for wild grilling. However, the Grill-Scouts in Cologne are helping to bridge this gap by educating park visitors about disposal options and encouraging responsible behaviour.
The Grill-Scouts' unique approach to waste management in parks is a shining example of community-involved, educational environmental stewardship in urban recreational spaces. While no official program description was found, their work stands out as a positive model for other cities to emulate.
