Grilling and water conservation: how participants join the Apple Tree Water Conservation Challenge
In a unique twist, fire departments in the Neubrandenburg region are stepping out of their traditional roles and into the world of horticulture. A trend that started with the planting of an apple tree by the Groß Nemerow/Rowa fire department has sparked a wave of community involvement among these emergency responders.
The apple tree planting trend allows fire departments to showcase their community involvement beyond firefighting and emergency response. The Groß Nemerow/Rowa fire department, divided between Groß Nemerow and Rowa, used a boat to transport their tree, affectionately named "Florentine," to land and plant it by water rescue during a simulated deployment meant to showcase their ability in water rescue.
This trend, which involves fire departments nominating each other to plant an apple tree within seven days, is seen as a way to motivate others to be active and come together. The challenge is spread through direct contacts, and many more fire departments in the region are currently nominated and eager to complete the challenge.
District fire chief Stephan Drews believes the trend is great for drawing attention to the fire departments and their colleagues in neighboring towns. Peter Lauterbach, fire chief of the Groß Nemerow/Rowa fire department, sees the trend as a way to show the diversity of their activities.
The fire departments in Burg Stargard, Beseritz, Pragsdorf, Sadelkow, Salow, Kotelow, Wulkenzin, Neverin, Neubrandenburg Oststadt, Woggersin, and Friedland have already participated in the challenge. The Wildberg fire department in the Amt Treptower Tollensewinkel plans to join the trend.
The trend also highlights the commitment of fire departments to volunteering. Members of the Groß Nemerow/Rowa fire department wanted to make their volunteering visible and show their unity through this tree planting. If a department fails to plant the tree, some let them off, while others demand a barbecue.
Despite the trend's recent popularity, it seems to have originated from an informal source, as there is no widely documented or notable apple tree planting challenge involving fire departments in Neubrandenburg that has been commonly reported or recognized in major news or public initiatives. For precise, current details, local fire department websites or social media channels around Neubrandenburg, or local news outlets, may be the best sources to check.
The trend is expected to gain momentum in the coming weeks, believes Stefan Wegner, as more fire departments in the Amt Treptower Tollensewinkel are expected to join the challenge. Fire departments are not typically associated with planting trees, but this trend is changing that perception, fostering a sense of unity and community engagement among these essential services.
