Graffiti on Railway Tracks
In the process of transforming his son's bedroom from a Construction Site theme to a train theme, an inventive author decided to create a unique wall art using the tape resist painting technique. The artwork was crafted on a 16x20'' canvas, providing ample space for intricate train track designs.
To begin, the author carefully chose a large number of short pieces of masking tape (0.25'' wide) to lay down lines representing train tracks. Focusing on abstract geometric patterns or simplified track shapes, the author avoided referencing any particular train or figure. The tape was firmly pressed to ensure clean edges and resist areas.
Next, acrylic paint, brushes, rollers, and even a foam brush and foam roller were used to apply paint evenly over the taped surface, covering both the inside and outside of the taped track lines. The author, who had leftover "Thomas blue" paint from making his son's Thomas costume, opted for this vibrant colour to make the tracks pop.
Once the paint was fully dry, the author carefully peeled off the tape to reveal crisp, clean lines where the tape resisted the paint, creating the train track pattern. This technique, known as tape resist, relies on the tape blocking paint in specific shapes and lines, highlighting the contrast between the painted and unpainted areas to create the artwork.
The author's son actively participated in this creative process, turning the canvas around to allow him to reach every part while painting. The end result was a stunning piece of non-character-specific train track art, ready to be hung in the son's new train-themed bedroom.
Experimenting with various colours and designs is encouraged when working with tape resist art. By being flexible with the tape's placement, artistic spontaneity can be embraced. While direct tutorials on train track art with tape resist may not be readily available, combining the known tape resist approach with simplified track line patterns will achieve your desired outcome.
