Trial run for electronic patient records - Germany's Healthcare Goes Digital: Mandatory ePRs Roll Out by October 1

By October 1, 2023, Germany's healthcare system has seen a significant shift with the mandatory use of electronic patient records (ePRs). Around 61,600 medical practices, including dental practices and pharmacies, have adopted the system, benefiting approximately 70 million insured individuals.

The ePRs, stored on servers in Germany with logged access, have been integrated into various healthcare facilities. Around 93% of practices are technically equipped for this change. Patients can access and control their data via an app, with over 1.37 million patients already doing so.

The ePR automatically generates a list of medications from e-prescriptions and will gradually include more data like medication plans. Insurers anticipate significant practical benefits for patients and the system. In the future, pseudonymized data may be used for research, with patients having the right to object.

The widespread adoption of ePRs in Germany marks a substantial step towards digitalizing healthcare. With patients having control over their data and the potential for research advancements, the ePR system is expected to improve healthcare services and outcomes.
