Slumber Serenades: Berlin Project Gathers Lullabies in 24 Diverse Languages

Compilation of Nighttime Narratives in 24 Languages Under Berlin's initiative - Gathering sleep songs across 24 different languages in Berlin's ongoing initiative

Gather 'round, music lovers! The streets of Berlin are buzzing with the harmonious hum of its "Berlin Falls Asleep" project - an entertainment venture that's been making waves in the city's diverse community.

"It's a beautiful thing to witness," a representative from the Berlin Music Council shared with the German Press Agency. "People come together, they sing to one another, spark conversations, inspire each other - it's a fantastic spectacle."

Since its kick-off in February, this culturally diverse choir has garnered the voices of 55 individuals from 24 different languages, including Afrikaans, Arabic, English, Japanese, Spanish, and Turkish. The latest addition to their songbook was contributed at the Carnival of Cultures.

The project seems to be a magnet for melody enthusiasts; demand for it appears to be brimming. Despite the impressive turnout, German remains the most sung language so far, the representative noted. Only four of the renditions seem to be repeats.

With a planned run ending this year, the next lullaby session is scheduled for June 28th at the Long Night of Sciences. Fancy joining the lullaby legacy without leaving your living room? An online tool now lets you record your own nighttime serenade at home.

The origins of this project can be traced back to the "Year of the Voice" initiative, where the voice became the instrument of choice for 2025. Berlin's music councils have embraced this call to arms with a series of concerts and workshops.

The ultimate objective of "Berlin Falls Asleep" is to develop a comprehensive collection and public archival of these timeless lullabies, intended for display at the Ethnological Museum. A web-based platform is also in the works, aiming to make these gently singing melodies easily accessible online. To add an engaging element, workshops will accompany the project.

While the goals for 2025 aren't explicitly laid out, given the project's success in Berlin's music scene, it's likely that the venture will persevere in offering fresh, innovative ways to engage the public with the universal language of music.

  1. The diverse community in Berlin is encouraged to participate in the "Berlin Falls Asleep" project, a vocational training initiative focused on music, which aims to develop a comprehensive collection and public archival of lullabies.
  2. Recognizing the project's potential for inspiring individuals and fostering collaboration, the "Berlin Falls Asleep" organization is exploring ways to extend its reach into various domains, such as fashion-and-beauty, home-and-garden, and even lifestyle areas, broadening the scope of its influence.
  3. In an effort to ensure the project's longevity, the "Berlin Falls Asleep" team is working on establishing partnerships with vocational training programs that focus on music production and education, fostering sustainable growth and continuity in the realm of music entertainment.
