Garden designer Monty Don to create pet-friendly space at RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2025
Monty Don, a renowned horticulturist and regular presenter of BBC Gardeners' World and Chelsea Flower Show coverage, is set to design a unique garden for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2025. The garden, named the RHS and Radio 2 Dog Garden, is part of the RHS's 'Your Space, Your Story' initiative and aims to celebrate the connection between the UK's love for dogs and gardens.
In collaboration with Jamie Butterworth of Form Plants, Monty Don has created a sensory garden that offers an immersive experience for our furry friends. The garden features plants with interesting textures and scents, such as oregano, and includes flowers in the blue-yellow spectrum, which dogs can perceive. It also offers quiet spaces for dogs to relax and decompress, demonstrating how thoughtful garden design can aid animal rehabilitation and well-being.
After the show, the garden will be relocated to Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, where it will be repurposed to provide comfort and enrichment for the animals there. Her Majesty The Queen's adopted Jack Russell Terriers, Beth and Bluebell, will also be featured on the path at the Battersea Dogs & Cats Home.
The RHS and Radio 2 Dog Garden was one of the most talked-about exhibits at the 2025 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. It successfully combined sensory appeal for dogs with horticultural beauty appreciated by visitors. Radio 2 presenter Jo Whiley will champion the garden on her show and curate a doggy playlist to be played in the garden during Chelsea 2025.
The garden will provide an area for humans to enjoy plants as well. It includes a neatly mown lawn and a large tree for shade. Brick paths in the garden will be inscribed with the names of dogs belonging to Radio 2 presenters and RHS ambassadors, including Monty's dog, Ned.
The RHS and Radio 2 Dog Garden is a pioneering project combining plant design with animal welfare through sensory stimulation and peaceful areas. It serves a therapeutic role at a prominent animal shelter following its Chelsea debut, highlighting the garden's noble cause and practical impact on animal welfare.
The garden also aims to help dog lovers create garden spaces for their pets. An area for dogs to visit supervised will be included in the garden, raising awareness of plants toxic to dogs and other pets. Monty Don's dog, Ned, has even made an appearance in a recording of the Talking Gardens podcast.
The RHS Chelsea Flower Show will take place in 2025, and this innovative garden is not to be missed. Whether you're a dog lover, a gardening enthusiast, or both, Monty Don's Dog Garden promises to be a memorable and enriching experience.
