The city of Duisburg is set to establish a modern animal welfare campus, the Tierschutzcampus, on Essenberger Straße in Asterlagen. This new facility aims to provide a safe, loving place for animals in need and temporary homes tailored to their requirements.

The project, which reflects years of dedication and engagement from the local animal shelter team and supporters, symbolizes a strong commitment to compassion, responsibility, and active animal protection in the city.

The Tierschutzcampus will encompass a reception building, small animal house, and other single-story buildings, with part of it equipped with photovoltaics and greenery. A new biotope is also planned to be created at the site.

The visitor area will be clearly separated from the quarantine department in the Tierschutzcampus, ensuring the safety and well-being of all animals. A green, approximately five-meter-high soundproof wall, 11.5 to 18.5 meters deep, is planned to minimize noise disruption in the surrounding area.

The front of the soundproof wall will be planted with trees and bushes, contributing to the campus's overall green design. The Tierschutzcampus will cover approximately 32,000 square meters and will have sufficient parking spaces for cars and bicycles.

Mayor Sören Link emphasized the importance of the Tierschutzcampus for animal welfare in Duisburg. The planned start of construction for the Tierschutzcampus is 2026, with completion by the end of 2027 or early 2028. However, the project is still pending approval by the city council of Duisburg.

An information event was recently held in mid-2025 to engage citizens, gather feedback, and incorporate suggestions into further planning steps. Around 150 citizens and representatives from administration and city council attended the meeting. Feedback from the participants will be documented and incorporated into the further planning.

This project represents a significant investment in animal welfare infrastructure for Duisburg and aligns with the city's commitment to responsible and compassionate animal care.
