Experiencing problems with water and power in a 1998 caravan? Here's what I managed to do to resolve the issue.

In a recent instance, a 1998 model caravan, purchased from Facebook Marketplace, was returned to its owner, Paul, after a week of touring. Upon inspection, Paul expressed confusion about the non-functioning water and lighting systems in the caravan.

Diagnosing the Leisure Battery Issue

The first step was to check the leisure battery's charge and connections. The battery was found to be dead, necessitating the installation of a new caravan leisure battery. However, even after the replacement, the water system remained unresponsive.

The next steps involved inspecting fuses and wiring related to the battery and water system. The electrical connectors were cleaned with switch cleaner and cotton buds soaked in methylated spirit. Despite these efforts, the problem persisted.

Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the Renogy 500A Battery Monitor inside the van was showing a blank screen. This suggested a potential issue with the battery system's electrical components.

Resolving the Water System Problem

For the water system, the initial checks included ensuring the water pump and hot water heater were receiving power. The water pump was not running despite the presence of water in the Aquaroll, and the external water pump in the caravan had a problem with its plastic retaining tabs that had snapped off.

A slight adjustment to the pump fitting brought it to life, suggesting a bad connection. However, when a new set of plastic tabs were fitted, the problem persisted. The issue was eventually traced to the new plastic tabs that slipped forward under the vibration of the pump operating.

A Systematic Approach

To troubleshoot such issues effectively, it's essential to follow a systematic approach. For the leisure battery, key steps include checking the battery charge and connections, inspecting fuses and wiring, evaluating the charger and battery health, resetting the battery, and managing power usage.

For the water system (including hot water), steps include checking the power supply to the water pump and heater, testing components, performing routine maintenance, and, if necessary, consulting a professional.

In this case, the water started running again after the installation of a new Filtapac inlet, which required careful cleaning of the mounting surface on the wall.

Final Thoughts

The author, Nigel Donnelly, a lifelong caravanner, emphasises the importance of a systematic approach when dealing with caravan issues. Paul, the owner of the caravan, mentioned that having a toilet and a proper bed in the caravan made a significant difference compared to camping in a tent.

This experience serves as a reminder for caravan owners to be patient and methodical when troubleshooting issues, and to seek professional help when necessary to ensure safety and optimal performance.
