European Union's Parliament and Council Collaborate
The Gütersloh Water Tower, a landmark in an unspecified location, underwent a significant change in function on September 15, 2025. The iconic structure, once used to supply the city with water, was repurposed as a registry office.
This transformation was a collaborative effort by the city registry office, Gütersloh Citizens' Foundation, and the district music school. The change from a water tower to a registry office created a unique wedding venue, with the tower standing next to the theater.
The inaugural wedding ceremonies took place on September 13th, 2025, with five couples tying the knot in hourly intervals from 9 am to 1 pm. Among them were Eugen Luitle and Christina Schmelter, who were married on their anniversary. Tim and Isabel Tresch were also part of the first batch of couples to exchange vows in this extraordinary setting.
The staff of the registry office ensured a festive atmosphere for the weddings. Floral decorations adorned the water tower, anniversary beach flags were hoisted, and weather-independent outdoor spaces were prepared. The effort was worth it, according to Registrar Manuela Marxen.
Appointments for weddings at the Gütersloh Water Tower were quickly filled, making it a popular choice for couples seeking a ceremony with a special atmosphere. For those who missed out on the initial opportunity, there's still a chance to celebrate at Villa Bartels, Kirchstraße 21, with the "Candlelight Ceremonies" scheduled for December 12th, 2025.
