Energy-Efficient Exterior Designs: Innovative Solutions for Green Buildings
Discover the future of eco-friendly facades as this informative webinar delves into how reuse and circular economy principles are decreasing their environmental impact and cutting costs. Hosted by Isabel Allen and featuring experts from Ash and Lacy, JM Architects, Eckersley O'Callaghan, Schuco, and Fletcher Priest Architects, this event is a must-see for those interested in green construction. 💚
Duration: 1 hour
Speakers:🤵💼 Stuart Hosier, Southern Regional Architectural Manager at Schuco👨💼 Ed Williams, Partner at Fletcher Priest Architects👩💼 Andrew Rogers, Director of JM Architects👨💼 Stefan Trifonov, Head of Engineering at Schuco👩💼 Rebecca Hartwell, Facade Consultant at Eckersley O'Callaghan👨🔬 Dr Jonathan Evans, CEO of Ash and Lacy
Dr. Jonathan Evans kicked things off by discussing strategies to lower the carbon emissions of building facades, focusing on material sourcing, specification, delivery, and design. He addressed the challenge of making informed material choices with the prevalence of greenwashing and unreliable data in the marketplace and questioned the BREEAM system for awarding points for seating seven meters from a window, which can lead to excess glazing. Evans suggested the introduction of a formal end-of-life directive to pressure manufacturers into taking back materials at the end of their life and finding efficient recycling solutions.
Example of Sustainable Facade Solutions:🏩 Bolton Central, a speculative office block developed by JM Architects, demonstrates the importance of considering cost and sustainability when opting for a solid brick facade over a "glass box."
Rebecca Hartwell from Eckersley O'Callaghan presented research on the inefficiency of contemporary facade materials, highlighting issues such as complexity, which makes recycling and reuse difficult. She emphasized the need to improve infrastructure, research warranties, and education specific to the disassembly and reuse of materials.
Schuco's Environmental Initiatives:🏗️ Schuco has developed a framework called Schuco Carbon Control to track, minimize, and manage the carbon footprint of their products throughout their life cycle, from design to end of life. They offer three grades of aluminum: standard, low carbon, and ultra-low carbon containing a minimum of 75% post-consumer scrap recycled content.
Innovative Approaches:
- In the webinar, Dr. Jonathan Evans underscores the importance of informed material choices for reducing carbon emissions in building facades, addressing concerns over greenwashing and unreliable data.
- The solid brick facade of Bolton Central, developed by JM Architects, serves as a testament to the significance of considering both cost and sustainability in design decisions.
- Rebecca Hartwell from Eckersley O'Callaghan advocates for improvements in infrastructure, research, and education on the disassembly and reuse of materials to address the inefficiency of contemporary facade materials.
- Schuco has implemented Schuco Carbon Control, a framework aimed at minimizing and managing the carbon footprint of their products throughout their life cycle, including the use of aluminum with up to 75% post-consumer recycled content.
- For those aiming to incorporate environmental science into their lifestyle, workplace-wellness, health-and-wellness, fitness-and-exercise, home-and-garden, and sustainable-living practices, this webinar offers valuable insights on eco-friendly construction methods.
- Besides the race against climate change, the future of education lies in fostering an awareness of the environmental impacts of our choices and adopting sustainable practices for the wellbeing of our planet and our environment.
