Dusseldorf explores plans for the forthcoming evolution of its lake
Improving Communication and Development at the Unterbacher See
The Unterbacher See, a popular recreational area known for its scenic beauty and diverse outdoor activities, is set to see some changes in the near future. A workshop titled "The Unterbacher See - Potentials and Development Opportunities" was held recently, attended by 25 interested citizens and key stakeholders.
The primary focus of the workshop was to address communication issues among lake residents and to the outside world, and to suggest a better infrastructure for the Unterbacher See, with a focus on short-term achievability. The project team for the workshop included Frank Pflüger, Jochen Kral, Benjamin Zwack, Karsten Palme, Tina Hörmann, and Silvia Beretta.
During the workshop, many ideas, suggestions, and impulses were collected. The central questions discussed included the desired offers for future users, infrastructure around and on the lake, creating participation, community, and awareness, and the role of nature and landscape protection. The goal is to design a sustainable and long-term viable guiding principle for the future development of the USee, considering both ecological and economic aspects.
The concept for the Unterbacher See will involve all parties concerned, including interest groups and users, the Unterbacher See association, and political decision-makers from Düsseldorf, Hilden, and Erkrath. HJPplan+ city planners and architects have already analyzed the Unterbacher See, its offerings, and prerequisites. The results of the workshop were presented, focusing on the recreational area at the Unterbacher See.
The completed concept study will be presented in September, with the association's assembly deciding which parts of the study should be transferred into a planning procedure. Some aspects require lead time before implementation can begin, but immediate action can be taken to address communication issues.
The Unterbacher See offers a variety of attractions, including hiking, cycling, and nature-based activities. Visitors enjoy scenic viewpoints, a quarry pond used as a local recreational spot, and outdoor adventure facilities including a high ropes course, canoeing, archery, and team-building floating construction activities. The workshops took place in the administrative building of the USee, and the aim is to further develop these offerings to attract more visitors and provide diverse, engaging experiences.
