A recent survey conducted by eBay among 2,000 motorists has revealed some concerning findings about the safety of car roof boxes in the UK. While a significant number of British drivers (31%) now own a roof box, only half of them (51%) feel confident about fitting it securely.

The popularity of staycations has made roof boxes a must-have accessory for many, as families pack their cars for holidays and weekends away. However, the survey found that just seven percent of respondents said they would check if a fully packed roof box is securely mounted before driving. This is a worrying statistic, as failing to properly fit and secure a roof box can pose hazards to the driver and other road users.

According to Section 40A of the Road Traffic Act 1988 (UK), a driver must ensure that the vehicle is not dangerously loaded and that any load, including roof boxes, is secured so it does not endanger others or cause obstruction. Contravening this requirement is a criminal offense and can result in prosecution, fines of up to £2,500, or the addition of three penalty points to the driver's licence.

To properly fit and secure a roof box, it is essential to match your vehicle's roof type (naked roof, fixed mounting points, or with rails) to the correct mounting system. The roof box should then be securely attached to the roof rack or mounting points with all clamps, bolts, or clips tightened correctly. It is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions and double-check stability by shaking the box and inspecting all securing mechanisms before driving.

eBay advises motorists to take time and follow instructions when fitting new accessories, and to ensure the load is securely attached before setting off. The online marketplace also recommends purchasing a roof box made for the driver's specific car.

Almost three quarters (70%) of those surveyed said they would check their tyre pressures, which is a positive sign that motorists are aware of the importance of vehicle safety. However, it is crucial that this awareness extends to the proper fitting and secure attachment of roof boxes as well.

It is clear that there is still work to be done in raising awareness about the importance of properly fitting and securing roof boxes. As staycations continue to be popular, it is essential that drivers take the necessary steps to ensure their vehicles are safe and secure on the road. By following the manufacturer's instructions, double-checking stability, and taking the time to properly fit and secure their roof boxes, motorists can help reduce the risk of accidents and keep themselves and other road users safe.
