Back in 2014, following the passing of her 102-year-old mother, Lady Chichester inherited the magnificent 1740s Palladian house known as Radbourne Hall. Her family can trace their roots with the estate back to the Middle Ages, hailing from the Chandos-Pole lineage.
The aged beauty was in dire need of tender loving care, as its fabric was deteriorating, and the ceiling was caving in due to the movement of a 20th-century structural steel beam.
Fast-forward to 2017-20, and under the supervision of Peregrine Bryant Architects, a comprehensive remodeling endeavor was initiated for Radbourne Hall. The roof was replaced, fire partitions and thermal insulation installed, and the aging services were upgraded.
This extensive remodeling not only respected the magnificent interiors, including the 1771-72 saloon boasting paintings by the celebrated artist Joseph Wright of Derby, but also aimed to modernize the house for contemporary living.
To make the house more functional for the 21st century, a sleek, modern kitchen was built in the former dining room, and an external stairway was added to the back of the building. This new addition provides a balcony off the grand saloon and establishes a connection between the garden and the first-floor rooms, without compromising the historic fabric. The stairway is cantilevered to create a minuscule gap between the old and new structures.
