Craft a Quick Felt Christmas Ball Decoration in Moments
Hey there! Let's get crafty this holiday season! Today, we're going to make a festive felt ball garland featuring polka dot balls and candy canes. It's a breeze to create and looks amazing adorning your tree, mantel, or any other spot that needs a little Christmas cheer!
Skills Required: No prior crafting skills are necessary for this project!
You're gonna dig this super fun and easy Christmas décor venture!
I'm all about using felt and plain wood when it comes to holiday crafts and decorations. I've proved my love for felt in past projects like felt ornaments and mistletoe. And don't forget those adorable gnome ornaments, where I even recycled some old scraps of felt for the hats!
Since felt is now my go-to crafting material, I'm using it for everything! This year, I created a basic felt ball garland, one for winter, and now a Christmas version! I've added polka dot balls and felt candy canes to level up the Christmas vibes.
This lightweight garland can be hung pretty much anywhere: around a doorway, on a mantel, or on your Christmas tree. It's effortless to hang up with pins or Command strips. So let's get started!
What you'll need:- 50 felt balls (around 48-50 for the base color, 10-12 for polka dots, and 6-8 for candy canes)- 12 red and white polka dot balls- 8 felt candy canes- 1 skein embroidery floss (about 8.7 yards or 26.1 feet)
Tools:- Scissors- Needle(s)
Making Felt Balls
Since I went all-in on different felt colors, I opted to buy ready-made felt balls for convenience. However, you can always make your own felt balls using roving, felt sheets, or yarn scraps if you want a more hands-on approach.
Using Roving
If you're a fan of DIY, you can make felt balls using the wet felting technique. You'll need wool roving, hot water, and dish soap for this process. I've provided a detailed tutorial on the process here.
Using Felt Sheets or Yarn Scraps
If you decide to make your balls using felt sheets or yarn scraps, the process is quite similar to using roving. Remember to use wool felt or wool yarn to ensure your balls hold together properly.
How Many Balls?
You can expect to get approximately 12-16 felt balls with a 1/2 oz package of wool roving. Keep in mind that the number of balls will vary slightly depending on how tightly you roll them.
Creating the Garland
Now that you have your felt balls, it's time to assemble the garland. Follow these instructions to create your festive masterpiece:
- Arranging the Felt Balls: Line up your felt balls in the desired order. Space them approximately 1 inch apart, and feel free to arrange the colors however you like.
- Preparing the Embroidery Floss: Cut your embroidery floss in half. The floss should be around 8-9 yards long. Tie a knot at one end, leaving a 9-inch tail or so. Thread a needle onto the other end.
- Stringing the Felt Balls: String a felt ball onto the floss using the tapestry needle. Push the needle through the center of the ball and to the knot. Continue stringing felt balls, doing several at a time. Every so often, add a polka dot ball or a felt candy cane piece.
- Spacing the Balls: Once you have several balls on the garland, space them out about 1 inch apart. Continue stringing balls until you get it to the length you want (mine is 8 feet long).
- Tying Off the End: Once you get to the last ball, tie off the end in a knot and trim with the scissors. Your garland is ready to hang.
